My Journey in Rock Climbing: From Beginner to Less Beginner

Introduction

I want to start my blog off with my rock climbing journey, from my first climb in August 2022 to my recent achievements. This personal blog explores the challenges, progress, and joy I've experienced over the past 2 years. Rock climbing has become a significant part of my life, and I want to share my story, hoping to inspire others to take up this incredible sport.

Starting My Climbing Journey

My first ever official boulder was in Italy. I grabbed a day pass and went with a friend, and I absolutely stank. I could barely do the "easy" climbs and really struggled to figure out the proper move sequence, or the beta. But honestly, the struggle I experienced that day motivated me to get better, so when I went back to Boston for college, I immediately sought after the climbing club. I started rock climbing back in Northeastern with a few friends, Eliot, Chris, and Matt. I instantly fell in love with it and have been climbing regularly ever since. Initially, we went together, and it was a fantastic way to bond and challenge ourselves.

Finding a Community

As I continued climbing, I met many amazing people who shared my passion. We often found ourselves at Central Rock Gym (CRG) Fenway, but we would also visit other locations like CRG North Station, Alewife, Harvard Square, and occasionally Rock Spot. The climbing community is incredibly supportive, and I've made lasting friendships through this sport.

Progressing in Climbing

Climbing has been a journey of constant learning and improvement. When I first started, like I said I stank. However, since the people I regularly climbed with were significantly better than me, I was able to progress faster and learn from them. With consistent practice and determination, I gradually progressed to more challenging routes. Over the past 18 months, I've managed to climb my first V8, a significant milestone in my climbing journey.

Achievements and Milestones

One of my proudest achievements is completing my first V7 climb, which took a lot of effort, patience, and perseverance. I spent at least 4 weeks on it going almost everyday, and I was finally able to send it the day the gym was taking it down. I look very shaky and wobbly, but it was so worth it. I was able to achieve my first V7 in only 7 months of climbing. It felt incredibly rewarding to reach this level and see the tangible results of my hard work.

Outdoor Climbing Adventures

While indoor climbing has been my primary focus, I've also ventured into outdoor climbing. Outdoor climbing offers a different set of challenges and experiences. I've climbed a V3 outdoors, which was a thrilling experience. The natural rock formations and the outdoor environment provide a unique and exhilarating climbing experience.

Boston offers some great outdoor climbing spots, and I've enjoyed exploring them. Climbing outdoors adds a new dimension to the sport, with varying rock textures and natural elements. It has also helped improve my technique and adaptability, as outdoor climbs often require different approaches compared to indoor routes and are much harder on the hands.

The Benefits of Rock Climbing

Rock climbing has numerous benefits, both physically and mentally. It has significantly improved my physical fitness, enhancing my strength, endurance, and flexibility. Climbing is a full-body workout that engages various muscle groups and promotes overall fitness.

Mental and Emotional Growth

Beyond physical benefits, climbing has also contributed to my mental and emotional well-being. It requires focus, problem-solving skills, and perseverance. The sense of accomplishment after completing a challenging route is incredibly fulfilling. But more importantly, the perseverance you gain after falling and failing and coming right back up again is what I find most valuable from climbing. Climbing has taught me to stay calm under pressure, to approach challenges with a positive mindset, to challenge yourself, and to not be afraid to fall.

Conclusion

Rock climbing has become an integral part of my life. From the initial encouragement of friends to achieving significant milestones, this journey has been incredibly rewarding. Climbing has not only improved my physical fitness but also contributed to my mental and emotional growth. The supportive climbing community and the thrill of conquering challenging routes keep me motivated to continue this journey. As I look forward to future climbs and new achievements, I hope my story inspires others to take up rock climbing and experience the joy and benefits it offers.
